Feinstein’s Gun Control Bill Exempts “Government Officials”

Yesterday I wrote the headline “Dianne Feinstein Introduces Gun Control – For Yours, Not Hers“. It was meant to partly be tongue in cheek, partly to be prophetic, because some part of me knew it was there.

Feinstein’s bill bans more 150 types of “assault” weapons. The list is here.

However, it also provides a provision that exempts government officials, law enforcement, and retired law enforcement personnel.

From the Washington Times:

Mrs. Feinstein’s measure would exempt more than 2,200 types of hunting and sporting rifles; guns manually operated by bolt, pump, lever or slide action; and weapons used by government officials, law enforcement and retired law enforcement personnel.

Confirmed by the Huffington Post:

Finally, the bill includes a number of exemptions: It exempts more than 2,200 hunting and sporting weapons; any gun manually operated by a bolt, pump, lever or slide action; any weapons used by government officials and law enforcement; and any weapons legally owned as of the date of the bill’s enactment.

Any law that is passed that does not affect everyone equally is not a good law or a just one. It is a tyrannical law, especially if it exempts the government class. Obamacare also exempts the government class. This is not a just law, and must be opposed.

From the Washington Times:

Vice President Joseph R. Biden said in a White House video chat Thursday that high-capacity magazines are a bigger focus for him right now than assault weapons, though he did say that fewer police officers were “outgunned” when the assault-weapons ban that expired in 2004 was still in effect.

Tell that to the Los Angeles Police back in 1997. SWAT has bigger arsenals and heavier weaponry, but do everyday cops need that kind of firepower? It seems to me that when the police become better armed than the citizens, it allows for abuses from the men and women of law enforcement.

Tell that to the Chicago “gun free zone”. It is already on pace to break records for the number of murders with firearms. It is fast becoming the new Detroit.

Most of the police officers I’ve dealt with in my life have been very nice and helpful. They are a credit to the profession, but there are those out there who have sticks up their butts and are on power trips.

What Feinstein is creating is a division among the people. If you own a firearm that is on her list, you can keep it, but you can’t sell it or transfer it in any way. This allows the government to swoop in after you die and take it, essentially disarming the people over the next century (long after she’s gone).

“No weapons will be taken from anyone,” [Feinstein] emphasized. “The purpose is to dry up the supply of these weapons over time.”

No weapons will be taken until after we die, leaving our children and grandchildren less well armed as the police and government.

The President will be travelling around the country lying to people, I mean, pushing his package, which includes such things as better data collection on people determined by the courts to be mentally ill.

Because the courts are the absolute authority on mental illness (sarcasm off). So the government screws it up again. They have to collect data on those considered to be mentally ill, rather than getting them help.

This is the benign government looking out for us? What if a “mentally ill” person has not been defined as such by the courts? Suppose that person had never been in trouble?

When someone goes and shoots someone, we immediately assume they are mentally ill. Adam Lanza was not mentally ill. He had a personality disorder like Asperger’s or something, and THAT IS NOT A MENTAL ILLNESS! It is also very unlikely that the Asperger’s caused him to commit this horrible act.

Advocates for gun control measures like to point out that opposition to gun control legislation is nearly universal among Republicans, and they point out that Republicans are recipients of heavy campaign donations from the NRA. The NRA has also donated money to Congressional Democrats.

Exempting government officials and police (both active and retired) shows that these government officials look down on us, that we are not as responsible as they are, and not to be trusted with firearms, therefore they can be exempt.

It aims not just at the Second Amendment, but at the Equal Protection clause of the 14th Amendment. To create a law that does not affect all equally is insidious, tyrannical, and violates the Constitution, in both spirit and letter.
